Steve Bannon, Tucker Carlson and... Liz Truss? Exploring the One-Time PM's Attempt for Maga

Britain's shortest-serving prime minister, began the first edition of her video series with a pledge to unmask "malicious actors" working to weaken the UK, United States and European nations. She stated she would uncover how an "international network of progressives function to weaken democracy and the electorate's mandate."

"We're going to look at the political movement of Donald Trump and see how it can be accomplished in Britain," she said. "We will interview the leading lights of the Trumpist political sphere."

In advance of the series premiere, there was a strong advocate. "This is the beginning of a kind of transformation," remarked veteran reporter John Solomon. The right-leaning media outlet Just the News will host the former prime minister's new broadcasts.

Forging Alliances in the Maga Media Ecosystem

UK-based allies, including a pro-Reform adviser, have also helped her launch the Liz Truss Show. The production is adequate, if somewhat rudimentary. The show has attracted 10,000 subscribers in her first week and her first episode garnered 67,000 views in that timeframe.

This marks a humble beginning, but in making common cause with Solomon, she is being thrust into a mature political media sphere generating and disseminating Make America Great Again themes. Its obsessions include alleged censorship by the mainstream media and a desire to dismantle a conspiratorial 'deep state' – a force that she attributes her downfall to for the abrupt termination of her short and troubled leadership.

"Just the News is not well-known outside of the Maga world, but it does have credibility there, largely because of Solomon, who offers opinions on conservative outlets like Bannon's 'War Room' podcast and has even interviewed Donald Trump," noted Alex Hinton, who has analyzed the Make America Great Again phenomenon.

A Divisive Associate

Her effort to bring American conservative media to the United Kingdom has pushed her closer to contentious individuals such as Solomon.

He founded his media outlet after backlash when allegations surfaced of promoting inaccurate reports about Joe Biden's anticorruption effort in Ukraine, as well as contentious articles about the former US ambassador to that country.

His claims were amplified across the conservative press, with Solomon featuring as a frequent visitor on the prominent cable news broadcast. The former president personally promoted his stories.

The journalist published the reports about Ukraine in a set of articles for the political newspaper the political newspaper, where he was re-designated as an opinion writer after colleagues complained about his work. His narratives were pivotal in Trump's pressure for the officials in Kyiv to investigate the Biden family in that year. These actions led to impeachment proceedings targeting Donald Trump. The Senate later acquitted the then-president.

Shortly after he exited the Hill in autumn 2019, the outlet announced it was carrying out a review of his columns relating to Ukraine. It determined the journalist had used questionable informants and stated he "omitted key facts about main Ukrainian informants, including the detail that they had been charged or were the subject of inquiries."

Entering the Ecosystem

The journalist's personal media appearances are a example of the political media environment Liz Truss is joining. Solomon mentioned his backing of the program on a broadcast he helps run on the conservative cable network, a rightwing cable channel that is home to the conservative firebrand ex-Trump strategist Bannon and on which commentator Tucker Carlson also features. She has already interviewed Bannon on one of her first podcasts.

Through her association with the journalist and his outlet, Truss has become a minor player in a broader ecosystem of pro-Trump platforms that often amplify each other's content.

The journalist's podcast and Real America's Voice show have repeatedly hosted figures such as influencer Mike Benz, a rightwing influencer whose criticism of the US Agency for International Development was cited by the tech billionaire as justification for closing the international development organization.

A Cross-Border Foray

While her awkward delivery and career difficulties have been mocked in Britain, some US observers do not dismiss her bid to reinvent herself as a local version of the pro-Trump media ecosystem.

"It is necessary to treat folks like that with seriousness, despite the fact that you may not want to accept their words at face value," commented Rob Flaherty, who served in the Biden administration.

"Observers witnessed how in 2024 Donald Trump utilized that media network to disseminate his views. Undoubtedly that network transmits and affects discourse abroad. It appears fairly obvious to me that the conditions in the United Kingdom are similar to what enabled this non-mainstream media network to prosper in the US."

Professor Alan Finlayson, said the internet-based conservative network was already having an impact in the UK.

"Online platforms is borderless," Finlayson remarked. "There exists a sort of milieu within which ideas travel – on occasion taking an extreme form and occasionally in softer tones – but which is networked."

The academic said the rise of the online right in the United Kingdom lately meant the "potential to have a larger effect is significant."
